 For youth groups

This picture is used again as it shows a range of youth groups in the context of adult members of the armed forces.

We begin with Cadet groups and move on to Scouts and Guides.

I include a lot of personal comment and sign myself now.

 Cadet groups

The Army, Navy and Royal Air Force are all represented in Ross and the Ross British Legion Committee is at the planning stage of its intention to visit the three groups.

It has been my privilege to play the bagpipe for the Ross Army Cadet Force at its annual dinner for the past two years.  It was a rewarding experience to see the cadets at the start of of their careers.  The fact that not all will go into the Army is beside the point.  Those within the three branches of the Cadets experience discipline and direction, two concepts which could be encouraged more in British society.  At the end of February, I played at a red-jacketed regimental dinner for the Royal Signals Corps at Credenhill and therefore have seen both ends of a continuum.  The three Services are multi-faceted and the ceremonial aspects sit alongside the action.  I will come to representative aspects later.

Many years ago, I was in contact with R A F Cadets.  One of them became the County Lord Lieutenant's Cadet.  That cadet went on to become a jet pilot and now holds the O B E.

Scouts

From Cub to Troop Leader as a Scout, after a couple of years I went on to run a Senior Scout Group.  One of my aims was to pass on the enjoyment I had experienced.  Climbing trees after midnight and removing a lid of a bucket to give a flaming signal to approaching soldiers on a training activity would not pass the risk-assessment process that all organisations these days go through.  Two years as Chairman of the Ross Scout Group was enough to convince me that things have changed.  The Scout movement is still another magnificent contribution to youth development and provides discipline and direction.  The Ross British Legion Branch is committed to involving every dimension of local youth activity.

 Guides

The last two sentences of the previous box sum up the situation.

 Representative aspects

The Ross British Legion Branch Committee meetings run within a format laid down by HQ.  However, the committee is free to explore innovation.  My mission is to see youth groups represented on the committee.

Leaders could select a mature sixteen-year-old to attend meetings where anything relevant to youth groups is announced well in advance so that reps need not attend every meeting.  The business would be dealt with soon after the start of the meeting.   The opportunity provides reps with experience of formal structure and relates to whatever representative situation exists within the sending organisation.

It is designed as a win-win scenario.  All components of the equation benefit.

There is to be a Summer Fete in July and all groups are invited to discuss ways in which they could contribute.

There are also pages on engaging youth both musically and poetically.
